Why did you choose to pursue an MCM degree, and why did you choose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine?

I chose to pursue the MCM degree at Cummings School because of the program’s unique integration of a One Health perspective into the curriculum. It was challenging to find an advanced degree that married my interests of public health and conservation into one, and this curriculum provides ample opportunity to explore the relationship between both. I appreciate different modes of learning, and the combination of the compelling courses, built in externship, and case study provides a multi-faceted approach to learning more about conservation medicine.

What are your interests and/or experience relative to conservation medicine?

My main areas of interest are finding ways to mitigate human wildlife conflict and minimizing zoonotic disease transmission. My interest in conservation medicine began after working a few summers at an AZA accredited zoo as a camp counselor, where I educated elementary age children about conservation efforts within zoos. However, my interest in conservation medicine peaked after spending a semester abroad in Thailand. There, I was able to see the effects of human-elephant conflicts, and how the management of zoonotic diseases affected animals, humans, and their environments. The program was largely centered around small animal and human health, as well as learning about the intricacies of the anthropogenic effects on animals and the environment. Since returning, I have been working in small animal veterinary clinics as a veterinary technician to gain more hands-on animal experience. My experiences both in the US and abroad allowed me to fall in love with public health and conservation efforts, and I am excited to explore other opportunities the MCM program will provide!

What are your career goals after completing the program?

Ultimately, I hope to obtain my D.V.M. degree after completion of the MCM program, to work primarily with elephants in other countries. My semester abroad coupled with my experiences in the US have diversified my perspective on veterinary medicine and have opened my eyes to the plethora of opportunities available. I am also keeping an open mind to see what other career opportunities the MCM program may show me along the way!
