Externship Grants
Gene Shapiro Scholars Program (Travel Stipends for Community Medicine Externship)
Currently enrolled clinical year Cummings School students who intend to move forward with a career in Shelter or Community Medicine and have self-identified an opportunity for additional training in this area at a partnering organization or program are eligible to apply for this funding opportunity. The funding is intended to remove a portion of the financial barriers associated with remote training sites and allow more students the opportunity to participate. To receive funding, students must receive some financial aid through Cummings School and be in good academic standing. Preference will be given to students from New York State or to those who intend to practice in the New York City area after graduation; however, awards are given out on a rolling basis and may be given to qualified students from any state or locale if there are not suitable students from New York in the pool. Any community medicine externship is potential for funding, although experiences that offer surgical training are the highest priority.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and awards given as funds permit, however the last date to apply for this academic year is May 1, and the externship must have taken place prior to this date to be eligible for support. A maximum of $2,500 can be awarded per student.
Contact Dr. Yuki Nakayama if you have program questions or Chad Argotsinger (chad.argotsinger@tufts.edu) to submit an application.
Karen Blixen Camp Trust (Externship Opportunity in Maasai Mara Region of Kenya)
In August 2018, the Karen Blixen Camp Trust launched the Mara North Concervancy Dog Project (MNCDog Project). The program has been established to assist Mara North Conservancy and the local community in dealing with the challenges involved in having (too many) domestic dogs, including disease transfer, scavenging in villages, and dogs roaming the conservancy in pursuit of wildlife.
Twice a year, currently enrolled clinical year Cummings School students can apply to participate in this funded externship opportunity. The externship takes place in May & November each year, with applications due two-three months in advance.
Contact Chad Argotsinger for more information or to apply.
