Why did you choose to pursue a MCM degree and why did you choose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine?

I chose to pursue a degree in Conservation Medicine due to the program’s interdisciplinary nature and foundation in the One Health approach, which I wholeheartedly believe is the future of sustainable wildlife conservation and the health of our own species. The MCM program’s holistic perspective mirrors my personal beliefs as it truly appreciates and honors the value of unique collaborations to innovate creative solutions to address the myriad issues our planet faces. I chose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine not only for its one-of-a-kind program but for the opportunity to be mentored and trained by its inspiring and expert faculty. I am grateful for the necessary skill set, networking opportunities, and invaluable knowledge I know they will provide in order for me to be successful in the field. I look forward to fostering meaningful relationships in our small group setting.

What are your interests and/or experience relative to conservation medicine?

My particular interests lie in human-wildlife conflict; community-based conservation; empowering women, specifically in developing countries, to preserve wild spaces and prevent disease; and the assisted reproduction of endangered and threatened species. My first experience relative to conservation medicine occurred in undergrad when researching disease in farmed quahogs and its effect on the local coastal community’s economy. Additionally, my love of field work and African wildlife led me to volunteer on an elephant conservation project in South Africa and assess coral reef health in Mozambique. My time spent working in veterinary care as well as my volunteer experience in education and animal care at Zoo New England further encouraged me to pursue this degree.

What are your career goals after completing the program?

My goal is to pursue the signature program of International Veterinary Medicine at Cummings School, although I trust that my experience in the MCM program will reveal my ultimate career path. Overall, I hope to leverage my artistic abilities and the skills gained from this degree to create more community conservation initiatives and education programs that integrate art, science, and health leading to sustainable wildlife conservation.
