My name is Bianca Lugo. I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in Pathobiology and Veterinary Sciences. I chose this major because my heart has always lied within veterinary medicine, but my brain has always found it’s enjoyment in all things medicine and science. For the last two years I have been working with a traveling veterinarian, giving me a unique perspective into the world of animal medicine. Going into people’s homes, especially mid-pandemic, and treating their critters has allowed me to create not only better interpersonal bonds, but also has allowed me the perspective into different ways to do medicine when not everything is readily available. I decided to join the MS-IDGH program because while at UCONN I took many classes that focused on the One Health approach, and I believe this program will allow me to further my contribution to my community.

My interest in infectious diseases began my sophomore year of college when I took microbiology. Quickly I found myself immersed in my wonder of bacteria and viruses, and how these microscopic beings could cause not only so much harm, but also so much benefit. I also feel like now is the optimal time to be learning about infectious diseases and how they impact us on a global perspective.

Outside of work I enjoy listening to music, hiking, camping, and spending time with my friends and family. I currently have a 2-year-old Labrador retriever named Kona but am hoping to adopt her a sibling in the near future! For right now she has plenty of entertainment with her two human brothers.  I am excited to begin this journey at Tufts and see where my future leads!
