Biography

Dr. Steve Rowell joined the Tufts VETS team in 2011 after serving for many years as the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Director of both the Foster Hospital for Small Animals and the Hospital for Large Animals at the Grafton campus of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the faculty at the school and is actively involved in the academic programs.

Dr. Rowell obtained bachelors’ degrees in geology and biology at the University of New Mexico. He earned his veterinary degree from Tufts in 1983. Dr. Rowell was drawn to the veterinary profession by a desire to be involved in medicine, but wanted more flexibility than typically exists in the human medical world. He fulfilled those goals as a practitioner, researcher, teacher, and administrator. Among his greatest accomplishments, Dr. Rowell administered the Cummings School’s Oral Rabies Vaccine Program on Cape Cod for many years and helped the Cummings School’s hospitals succeed as academic referral centers for veterinary colleagues in practice.

Dr. Rowell lives in Westborough, Massachusetts, with his wife of 36 years, Trudy. They have two sons: Adam, an electrical engineer studying toward his PhD at Stanford University, and Seth, a civil engineer working for a firm in Boston. When not at Tufts VETS, Dr. Rowell enjoys spending time with Trudy and their twin granddaughters Cailin and Anne. When time permits, he loves woodworking along with being outdoors—walking, hiking, skiing, gardening and keeping up with the two little girls.
