Why did you choose to pursue this degree, and why did you choose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to pursue this degree?
Conservation medicine is the ideal mix of human, animal, and ecosystem health. My background as a Paramedic gave me an understanding of the challenges faced in the field of public health. I believe a conservation medicine approach is the future of public and global health, and I am excited to continue my academic and professional journey in this program. I chose Cummings School's MCM program because of its small size and the individualized attention provided to students in the program.
What are your interests and/or experience relative to conservation medicine?
My experience has been as a paramedic in both dense urban areas and remote rural communities. For my undergraduate thesis, I worked with teachers in Southern Africa to develop and implement a media literacy curriculum for adolescents to teach them how to recognize medical misinformation online. Giving back to my community is important to me, and I volunteer at a local nonprofit conducting creek surveys and water quality testing, as well as at the local animal shelter. Previously, I have volunteered in wildlife rehabilitation, homeless outreach, and harm reduction centers.
What are your career goals after completing the program?
After completing the program, I plan to continue to complete a P.h.D. I would love to work internationally, possibly focusing on conflict mitigation and community engagement.
