Biography
Dr. Jan Dizard received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. For the past twenty years, his research and teaching has focused on the changes in the perceptions of nature that western societies have experienced. He has written on environmental conflicts over hunting, forestry, and endangered species. His current project explores the emergence of conservation biology and restoration ecology and what that has meant for how ecologists conceive nature. In addition, he is working to get an environmental studies program established in Amherst’s curriculum.
