Conservation Medicine in IDGH

Established in March of 1997, the Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine (Tufts CCM) is housed in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health (IDGH) and is a founding member of the Consortium for Conservation Medicine. The Center for Conservation Medicine at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University was the first university-based center devoted to the study of conservation medicine. Conservation medicine focuses on health relationships occurring at the interface of humans, animals and the environment, and seeks to develop and apply health management practices, policies and programs that sustain biodiversity and protect the ecosystems essential to animal and human health. With an interdisciplinary team approach, conservation medicine works to solve complex global health problems such as controlling disease in wildlife populations to help protect human and animal health and preserve species biodiversity.

The mission of Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine is to advance the health of animals, people and the environment through professional training, research and service to communities around the globe, utilizing a conservation medicine approach. Many Cummings School students have a great deal of interest in wildlife, international veterinary medicine and conservation. The Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine provides opportunities for students to participate in global initiatives concerning animal, human and ecosystem health in conjunction with our International Veterinary Medicine and Wildlife and Conservation Medicine signature opportunities. The center has established programs in regional and international conservation medicine research and has developed novel curricula in conservation medicine to meet the needs of both veterinary and post-graduate students.
