Diagnostic Imaging Residency Program Selection Process
Tufts residents are selected through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP). This program collects all the information required of candidates and formalizes all applications nationwide. You MUST apply through VIRMP’s matching program to be considered for a radiology residency at Cumings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
The application package and additional information can be obtained at the VIRMP website
Support inquiries can be accessed through the “Contact Us” link on the VIRMP website.
The VIRMP uses a web-based interface for the application process. Prospective residents can create accounts, fill in applications, and enter their ranked list of programs starting in November. Applications must be received by all institutions by the first week of January. Descriptions of residency programs can be accessed through VIRMP's program search.
Tufts’ minimum requirements for a new resident are as follows:
- D.V.M. or equivalent degree, as established by the educational commission for foreign veterinary graduates (ECFVG) from the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association). For information contact AVMA Educational commission for foreign veterinary graduates
- Clinical Internship (one year), also arranged through VIRMP, or equivalent private practice experience (usually 2-3 years). Applicants with a basic sciences background, such as people holding a post graduate degree (Masters, Ph.D.), may use their post graduate degree in lieu of the internship year. Postgraduate work with a direct application to clinical practice is preferred.
- Three letters of reference from veterinarians who have direct knowledge of your personality, skills, and past experience. At least one letter should be from a board-certified veterinary radiologist (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology or European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging). Letters from specialists in other clinical disciplines (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, emergency/critical care) are strongly encouraged.
- Letter of intent, in which you explain why you want a radiology residency, what you will contribute to our program, and what you want to do once you become a radiologist.
- Veterinary School grades (with a certified translation into English if they are in any other language).
- Veterinary Medical diploma (certified translation into English if it is in any other language).
- Class rank (for example, you graduated 10th out of 50 in your class, or 8th of 50, etc.).
- Grade point average during your veterinary education, if available from your alma mater.
- Curriculum vitae (CV).
New residents are accepted by Cummings School at Tufts University every year. Approximately 100 candidates apply, and there are usually two open positions per year in radiology. Both sponsored and unsponsored positions may be offered each year.
Inquiries should be directed to the residency program directors, Dr. Mauricio Solano or Dr. Amy Sato.
