Joseph Kelley, D.V.M. Simulation Laboratory

Joseph Kelley, D.V.M. Simulation Laboratory (Kelley Simulation Lab) is a 3,000-square-foot center for hands-on learning and innovation at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University (Cummings School). It provides students with a safe and supportive environment in which to practice essential clinical and communication skills.

Inside the lab, you'll find a wide range of learning opportunities:

  • Low-fidelity task trainers for mastering foundational techniques.
  • High-fidelity immersive simulations that recreate real-world clinical scenarios.
  • Cadaver and non-invasive live animal labs for building confidence and competence in practical procedures.

Beyond formal curricular courses, the lab is open for self-directed practice and hosts drop-in study hours and course-specific office hours. Whether preparing for a clinical skills assessment, refining surgical techniques, or seeking individualized feedback during office hours, the lab is designed to support student growth throughout the D.V.M. program.

Our faculty and staff also contribute to veterinary education research and design custom training models to augment our collection of commercial simulators. This ensures Cummings School faculty have access to tools that reflect both current practice and emerging techniques.

In addition to student learning, the lab hosts continuing education workshops and provides equipment support for simulation-based teaching activities across campus, making it a hub of collaboration, learning, and professional development.

History of the Lab

Joseph Kelley, D.V.M., was a dear friend and mentor to Cummings School alumni. A generous gift made in his memory enabled the construction of Kelley Simulation Lab at Cummings School. The lab was dedicated to him on May 20th, 2022. As a veteran of seven World Vets campaigns, Joe offered medical and surgical services to countless animals in countries without routine access to veterinary care. He also mentored young veterinarians and veterinary students, a role he absolutely relished. Dr. Joe, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him well, left behind a profound legacy. His spirit will live on in so many, including all those who utilize Kelley Simulation Lab.

There are no staffed hours on University holidays, or in the event of weather-related campus closures.

There may be occasional times during normal staffed hours when lab staff are not available due to commitments elsewhere. Lab spaces are still available for self-directed study during these times.

Nero's Law Trainers

Kelley Simulation Lab maintains a supply of equipment and consumables that can be borrowed for use by veterinary trainers for the Nero’s Law Training Project.
