Why did you choose to pursue this degree, and why did you choose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to pursue this degree?
My interest in conservation started with my love for zoos and aquariums. They stood as a safe place for me to learn and have fun. As I worked towards a career with animals I became increasingly interested in the larger implications of conservation and its impact on the world as a whole. I chose to pursue this degree at Cummings School because of the highly reputable professors and the connection to the veterinary school as opposed to just the main campus.
What are your interests and/or experience relative to conservation medicine?
I had an interest in reintroduction of threatened species and how habitat preservation is a key role in the process. I have experience volunteering at a big cat sanctuary that housed not only big cats such as tigers, lions, and cougars, as well as small cats like servals and non-cats such as coatimundi and kinkajous. This sanctuary took in privately owned pets that people were no longer capable of taking care of. My role was to clean enclosures, prepare meals, and provide enrichment activities.
What are your career goals after completing the program?
After completing this program, I plan to apply to veterinary school to further pursue a career in conservation medicine as a veterinarian. I want to continue to further my education to one day make an impact on conservation efforts.
