Large Animal Medicine Internship

Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is inviting applications for internships. The Hospital for Large Animals at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center is a full-service hospital, of which the caseload is predominantly competition and pleasure horses (89%). The remaining caseload is distributed between food animal and exotic species.

Sophisticated diagnostic facilities include a pulmonary function laboratory, endoscopy (including gastroscopy), ultrasonography, nuclear imaging, computed tomography, high-speed treadmill analysis (including videoendoscopy and stress-testing), and a comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory. The primary responsibility of the medicine intern at Cummings School will be to assist clinicians and residents in receiving and evaluating patients; the intern will assist in all aspects of the management of these patients under supervision of clinicians and residents. The intern will share after-hours emergency duty on a rotating schedule with the large animal medicine and surgery residents. The intern will receive an emergency fee for all after-hours emergency cases. The intern will assist in the teaching of veterinary students and will participate in rounds, seminars and didactic training as provided. There is a thriving research program in respiratory medicine, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in one of the many ongoing investigations.

The Hospital for Large Animals is located on 594 acres in a rural setting and is within easy reach of Worcester (13 miles) and Boston (47 miles). The applicant should be aware that the hospital has a dress code.

The intern will have shared primary emergency coverage duties after an initial mentorship period and fulfillment of skill set requirements. Interns receive additional compensation for emergency work. Upon completion of this internship program, you will be well prepared to enter either private practice or a residency program.

Inquiries should be addressed to Lori Muhr.

The applicant should submit his or her application through AAVC's Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program.
