Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is a diverse and inclusive campus where our faculty are active citizens. Many are involved in their communities and dedicated to serving the needs of Massachusetts, New England, and the world through veterinary education, research, animal care, and life sciences.
For almost 50 years, our faculty research has helped develop COVID-19 vaccinations and diagnostic tests, novel therapeutics for toxins, vaccinations for childhood diarrheal diseases, and multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis. Infectious disease and global health research and education programs have helped combat global health issues, such as Lyme disease, and emerging and zoonotic diseases, such as avian influenza, and control economically devastating animal diseases, such as rinderpest. Comparative biomedical and clinical research has helped advance animal and human health, including understanding the viral basis of cancer, supporting the development of regenerative medicine, finding new cancer treatments, and helping to address the opioid epidemic.
The NIH-supported Tufts New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory is a hub of cutting-edge infectious disease research focused on human and animal health and bioterrorism prevention. Industry and academic researchers work side-by-side to pursue common problems. Our faculty collaborate with other veterinary schools, UMASS Chan Medical School, MIT, and Harvard University, bringing a unique perspective to help solve medicine, clinical, and One Health problems in the U.S. and globally.
