Radiation Oncology Specialty Internship
The radiation oncology internship is designed to provide training in small animal radiation therapy. The internship will prepare the candidate for a residency in radiation oncology.
Program Overview
Interns receive mentorship and clinical training under the supervision of Celina Morimoto, D.V.M., MSc, DACVR-RO, and Patricia Gualtieri, D.V.M., M.S., DACVR-RO, DECVDI-RO. Training is further supported by a multidisciplinary team of board-certified specialists in:
- Surgery
- Internal Medicine
- Emergency and Critical Care
- Neurology
- Medical Oncology
- Cardiology
- Ophthalmology
- Radiology
- Anesthesiology
- Clinical Pathology
- Nutrition
This collaborative environment provides broad exposure to the comprehensive care of oncology patients.
Clinical Training
Training takes place at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals in North Grafton, Massachusetts, approximately 40 miles west of Boston.
The internship is structured to provide extensive hands-on experience in radiation oncology:
- Radiation Oncology: Approximately 90% of training time
- Medical Oncology: 2-week rotation
- Anesthesia: 2-week rotation
- Neurology: 1-week rotation
Advanced Radiation Oncology Facilities
The Radiation Oncology Service utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including:
- Varian Clinac iX linear accelerator
- RapidArc™ technology
- 120-leaf Millennium™ multileaf collimator
- On-board imaging, including cone beam CT
- ARIA™ oncology information management system
- Varian Eclipse™ treatment planning software
These resources provide interns with experience using advanced treatment planning and radiation delivery techniques.
Academic and Professional Development
Interns participate in a variety of educational activities designed to strengthen clinical knowledge and support professional growth, including:
- Daily clinical interactions with faculty and students
- Weekly oncology journal clubs
- Oncology book clubs
- Clinical case discussions and rounds
Teaching Experience
As part of the program, interns contribute to the clinical education of fourth-year veterinary students, gaining valuable teaching and mentorship experience while working alongside faculty specialists.
