Anesthesiology Residency
The Anesthesiology Residency Program at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is a three-year advanced clinical training program designed to prepare residents for board certification through the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA). The program offers comprehensive clinical, academic, and research training in veterinary anesthesiology and analgesia.

Clinical Training
Residents spend the majority of their time on clinical rotations working closely with a collaborative anesthesia service that includes:
- 4 anesthesiologists
- 3 anesthesia residents
- 13 full-time veterinary technicians
- 4 part-time veterinary technicians
Additional specialty support and training opportunities are available through services including:
- Internal medicine
- Cardiology
- Neurology
- Oncology
- Critical care and emergency medicine
- Ophthalmology
- Radiology
- Exotic animal medicine
- Wildlife medicine
The program also includes dedicated rotations in the small animal ICU and emergency service, along with time for conference attendance, research, and focused exploration of anesthesia-related interests.
Faculty areas of expertise include:
- Molecular biology of pain
- Acute and chronic pain management
- Perioperative patient care
- Locoregional anesthesia techniques
- Stress reduction and animal welfare
- Large animal analgesia and critical care
Research & Academic Development
Research and scholarly activity are integral components of the residency experience. Residents are required to:
- Complete a research project
- Submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal prior to program completion
- Participate in seminars, journal rounds, and clinical conferences
Dedicated time is provided throughout the program to support research, conference participation, and professional growth.
Teaching Opportunities
Residents contribute to the educational mission of the school through:
- Teaching veterinary students on clinical rotations
- Assessing student performance and clinical competencies
- Instructing clinical skills laboratories throughout the year
These experiences help residents develop strong clinical teaching and mentorship skills in an academic environment.
Appointment & Benefits
Residency appointments are made on a 12-month basis with annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory progress. Upon successful completion of the program, residents receive a certificate of residency.
