Ophthalmology

A team of vets examining a horse

Our Ophthalmology Service is led by Dr. Pumphrey who is a board-certified ophthalmologists with extensive equine experience. Dr. Pumphrey provide a full range of diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic treatments.

All patients receive a thorough ocular examination, which includes fluorescein staining, intraocular pressure measurement and a fundic evaluation. Additional diagnostic services that are available include vision evaluation, ocular ultrasound, electroretinography, CT and MRI.  While the majority of our caseload consists of known or suspected eye diseases, we are also available to perform pre-purchase ocular examinations on horses.

We regularly perform a wide range of surgical procedures ranging from the management of eyelid and ocular surface tumors and lacerations to laser treatment for iris cysts or glaucoma to corneal grafting and placement of suprachoroidal cyclosporine implants for equine recurrent uveitis.

We can perform many of these procedures while our patients are under sedation. In cases requiring general anesthesia, we work in conjunction with our experienced Anesthesia Service, staffed by board-certified anesthesiologists and anesthesia technicians who have extensive equine experience.

Because we understand that your time is important, and that transport is not always easy, we are usually able to arrange for procedures to be performed on the same day as your appointment or the day following the appointment. In many cases, we can also work with your primary care veterinarian for rechecks and aftercare. If you believe your horse may need a procedure, please have your veterinarian call us to discuss the details and set up an appointment.
