Equine Reproductive Services

Tufts Veterinary Field Service (TVFS) offers a range of specialty equine reproductive services, for mares, foals and stallions. With board-certified specialists and highly experienced equine clinicians on staff, we are always available to assist with routine mare breeding work, and with advanced procedures. 

The team at TVFS can see your horse at our custom-built, haul-in facility, or we can travel to you with our portable ultrasound, x-ray and endoscopy imaging equipment. Routine appointments and full emergency coverage can be provided to clients within our designated practice area, but scheduled appointments can be made for clients who live further away. 

Mare reproductive services:

• Breeding soundness examination, infertility investigations and pre-breeding examinations 
• Artificial insemination with fresh, chilled and frozen semen
• Embryo transfer
• Pregnancy diagnosis 
• Twin reductions 
• Fetal sex determination 
• Caslick surgery and other vulval and perineal surgical procedures
• Monitoring of high-risk pregnancies, including assessment of the placenta 
• Management for abnormal reproductive behavior in the mare
• Assistance with foaling and post-foaling complications

Stallion reproductive services:

• Stallion breeding soundness and pre-breeding examination
• Infertility investigation, including reproductive ultrasonography 
• Semen analysis
• Stallion semen freezing and post-thaw evaluation

Foal services:

• Perinatal care and dystocia management 
• Assessment and management of neonatal (newborn) foals, including IgG testing and plasma transfusions 
• Treatment of sick foals
• Management of foal flexural and angular limb deformities, including x-ray 
• Screening and monitoring of foal respiratory disease with ultrasound scanning
