DVM Student Laptop Requirements

All incoming DVM students at the Cummings School are required to have a laptop computer. There are many uses for a laptop in our curriculum, including a virtual microscopy program in the first year histology as well as general pathology courses, computer-based exams, and research. You may use either a PC or a Mac.

The specifications below are important for computer-based examinations using the program ExamSoft:

Minimum System Requirements for Fall 2016

Below are the Minimum System Requirements for SofTest users that will be used during the Fall 2016 academic semester.

PC Requirements:

  • Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
  • Only genuine U.S.-English, French, Portuguese, Swedish, and British versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported
  • ExamSoft does not support Tablet devices other than Surface Pro as detailed below
  • CPU Processor: 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or greater
  • RAM: 2GB of RAM or greater
    Hard Drive: 10GB of Free Space - 256GB or greater total capacity recommended
  • Internet connection for SofTest Download, Registration, Exam Download and Upload
  • Screen Resolution must be 1024x768 or higher
  • Adobe Reader (Version 9 or 11) is required for exams containing PDF attachments
  • Administrator level account permissions (Instructions)

Surface Pro Requirements:

  • Surface Pro 1, 2, 3, and 4 (Non-Surface Pro devices are NOT supported)
  • External Keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) required. Bluetooth keyboards must be paired prior to launching exam
  • Hard Drive: 10GB of Free Space - 128GB or greater total capacity recommended
  • Adobe Reader XI is required for exams containing PDF attachments
  • Internet connection for SofTest Download, Registration, Exam Download and Upload
  • Screen Resolution must be 1920x1080
  • Administrator level account permissions

Mac Requirements:

  • Operating System: 10.9 (Mavericks), 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan). Only genuine versions of Mac Operating Systems are supported
  • CPU: Intel processor
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Hard Drive: 10GB of Free Space - 256GB or greater total capacity recommended
  • Server version of Mac OS X is not supported
  • Internet connection for SofTest Download, Registration, Exam Download and Upload
  • Administrator level account permissions (Instructions)

We highly recommend that new laptops be purchased with a four-year hardware support agreement as our Information Technology Services (ITS) group does not support repair of student computers.

Financial Aid
Students who will be seeking financial aid should be aware that the cost of a laptop computer, up to certain limits, can be added to the student's budget for purposes of computing financial aid under the guidelines of the U.S. Office of Education.
