Precautions for Avian Influenza (HPAI)

Cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been reported in wild birds in Massachusetts. While the risk of transmission of HPAI to humans is considered to be low, we recommend contacting your local animal control officer (ACO) for assistance if you have found a sick or injured bird.

If you choose to pick up and transport the bird to Tufts Wildlife Clinic, we recommend avoiding close, prolonged contact and following these guidelines from the CDC:

  • Minimize direct contact by wearing gloves and washing your hands with soap and water after touching birds.
  • Wear respiratory protection, such as a 3-ply disposable mask, or a KN95 or N95 mask.
  • Change your clothing before contact with healthy domestic poultry and birds after handling wild birds, discard the gloves and facemask, and then wash your hands with soap and water.
