Katie Zgorski, VG23

Baltimore, MD

Graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science and Biology and Minor in Chemistry from University of Miami, 2022

Why did you choose to pursue this degree, and why did you choose Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to pursue this degree?

I chose to pursue this degree at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine because of the uniqueness of the program. I decided to apply for this master’s program because I have always been interested in animal and environmental health and was undecided if I should apply to vet school right away. When I found out about this program, I thought it was a perfect pathway from my marine science background into real-world applications while also fostering my interest in veterinary medicine. I am interested in marine animals, particularly marine birds and mammals.

What are your interests and/or experience relative to your program?

Prior to entering this program, I have experience responding to various marine mammal strandings in South Florida with the Marine Mammal Rescue Team at my undergraduate university and working with giant tortoises in the Galápagos Islands while studying abroad there. The seed of conservation and marine science was planted in me early in life; however, it was amplified when I began interning and volunteering at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD freshman year of high school.

What are your career goals after completing the program?

A career goal after completing the program would be to work in a rehabilitation hospital for marine or wild animals.
