Barbara Magruder with her black cat, Beatrice

I am a lifelong animal lover, but pet ownership has only recently been a part of my life. I began as a foster parent to a cat and her kittens and ended up keeping the mother, Melissa. After I lost her, Beatrice came into my life when she was 9 months old and full of energy. On the day we met, she snuggled in my lap and immediately fell asleep; I knew she and I belonged together.

My history with Tufts University runs deep. My mother graduated from the medical school and both my parents taught there. I am an undergraduate alumna (Jackson College). I was so proud when Tufts started the veterinary school in Grafton. New England needed a veterinary school, and it has always felt natural to include Cummings School among my annual gifts to Tufts University.

Luckily, neither Melissa nor Beatrice needed to visit Cummings Veterinary Medical Center, but I am grateful to have it as a resource. It is a wonderful feeling to help animals and the veterinarians who care for them. Being a part of the Loyal Companion Society is an honor, and I am glad I can do something to make the lives of animals better—just as Melissa and Beatrice have made mine.
