Exotic Medicine Internship

The internship in Exotic Medicine at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine involves training in all aspects of clinical exotic medicine as well as surgery in the exotic patient with a special emphasis on emergency medicine. The ideal candidate has at least one year clinical experience in small animal medicine and surgery, and is well versed in the handling, anatomy and physiology of the exotic patient. The caseload of the clinic is approximately 30% rabbits, 30% ferrets, 30% birds, and 10% reptiles, amphibians and fish.

The intern is mainly responsible for emergency coverage and daily patient care. Daily duties include client communication, communication with referring veterinarians, clinical duty on in-patients, supervision and teaching of fourth year DVM candidates on clinical rotation, and providing critical care and emergency coverage. In addition the intern will present one 45 minute oral presentation to staff and faculty during the year.

A certificate of internship is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion of the 12 month training program.
