DVM/PhD with Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

DVM/PhD with Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

This dual-degree program provides an opportunity for a limited number of highly qualified students to pursue the doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree and the doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree simultaneously over approximately seven years. Through the dual-degree program, students receive rigorous training in a basic science research discipline, as well as full academic and clinical training as a veterinarian. The PhD portion of the program is available at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

Summer laboratory rotations will take place between the first and second years of veterinary school, and again between the second and third years. Instead of beginning their third of fourth year of study at Tufts, veterinary students will enter the PhD program full time. These years of study will include additional course work, beginning thesis research, and passing qualifying examinations.

Then, students will finish their thesis work, including the writing and defending of the PhD thesis. Students in the DVM/ PhD program are able to append some time on clinical rotations during this period, but preferably not more than one month each year. Immediately after the successful thesis defense, students will spend their final one or two years in veterinary clinical training at Tufts, and will receive the joint DVM/ PhD upon completion.

Interested applicants must apply separately to each program and meet the respective admission criteria of each.
