M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)

May-July 2019
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo: Conserving Wildlife through Animal Policy Click link for presentation
Mallori Morris

As a conservation intern for Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo I focused on ethogram research for animals on the AZA Species Survival Program, horticulture projects and participated in various local conservation programs with institutions such as Sacred Heart University and Connecticut’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. My time was divided between the Education Department and the Animal Care Department, where I gained valuable knowledge on the innerworkings of a small zoo. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo gave me the opportunity to experience an AZA inspection and the factors that go into being AZA accredited. The MAPP program has provided me with the proper skillset in research, public policy and communication, which were a necessity throughout my externship journey. Learning how to convey the message of wildlife conservation through public policy was a lesson well learned from the MAPP program and my externship, preparing me to excel in my future endeavors.
