Animal Welfare Institute, Government Affairs Intern
Allison Ludtke

This summer, I was the Legislative Intern in the Government Affairs department at the Animal Welfare Institute. After the MAPP program, I knew I wanted a taste of the policy process–being at a non-profit in the heart of D.C. certainly provided me with that and gave me a sense of how to navigate a hostile political climate. I spent my summer lobbying on behalf of bipartisan legislation, such as the Big Cat Public Safety Act and the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. I wrote op-eds and E-Alerts, created social media content, tracked federal and state legislation, and attended briefings and hearings. I also assisted in research for policy development, legislative testimonies, and meetings with Congressional staffers.

The MAPP program prepared me for this experience by providing me with technical research skills, a diverse knowledge of the animal welfare movement, and experience in both communicating policy positions and an understanding of the stakeholder dynamics that drive policy change. This internship gave me the opportunity to build upon my understanding of the policy process and participate in it first-hand on Capitol Hill.
