COVID-19 Guidance: Guidance and operational updates for Cummings School and its veterinary teaching hospitals


The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time assistant clinical professor faculty position. This position will provide clinical support in Tufts Wildlife Clinic, teach students in the DVM and graduate programs, engage in research and scholarly activity, and provide service to the school, the university, and the community.

Tufts Wildlife Clinic is a stand-alone facility dedicated to the medical care of sick and injured native New England wildlife. The clinic is a unique and integral part of the veterinary curriculum, offering extensive exposure to wildlife and conservation medicine for students with a specific interest in the field and providing training in the triage and stabilization of wildlife species to all students. The clinic has digital radiography, a surgery suite, and specialized patient enclosures including two one-hundred-foot raptor rehabilitation flight cages, several smaller flight aviaries, a sea bird pool with filtration, and a carnivore area able to house medium-sized mammals such as bobcats and yearling black bears. Avian species comprise the majority of the clinic caseload, with seasonal influxes of native turtles and small mammals. Typical yearly caseload is around 4,000 animals. It is a fast-paced clinical environment with a close-knit and supportive team currently consisting of the clinic director (a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, avian specialty), a veterinary fellow, two veterinary interns, three part-time certified veterinary technicians, a clinic coordinator, and two part-time program assistants.

This position requires working closely with the wildlife clinic director to provide medical and surgical care of wildlife patients and assisting with clinic operations. After-hours and weekend phone support of house officers is expected.  Teaching of students in the pre-clinical teaching program and in clinical rotations and supervising and mentoring house officers is required. Clinical track faculty members are expected to participate in independent or collaborative research and scholarly activity sufficient to remain current in wildlife medicine.  The position responsibilities will be distributed as 30 weeks of clinical activity, including supervision of clinical rotations; ~5 weeks for pre-clinical DVM and graduate teaching; ~5 – 10 weeks for research and scholarly activity; and ~5 weeks service.


Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and have a minimum of 5 years clinical experience with a minimum of 3 years of experience specifically in wildlife clinical medicine and rehabilitation. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to take a team-oriented approach to case management and understand ethical and conservation issues related to wildlife medicine and rehabilitation. Advanced clinical training in wildlife medicine or a related discipline is an asset. Experience with avian orthopedic surgery is desired. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in DVM teaching are required, with enthusiasm for teaching both clinical techniques and broader concepts related to conservation medicine to veterinary students.
