COVID-19 Guidance: Guidance and operational updates for Cummings School and its veterinary teaching hospitals

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking up to three highly motivated veterinary anatomic pathologists to join a rebuilding group of academic diagnosticians.  Successful applicants will be one who is a successful educator, has the ability and desire to mentor residents and DVM students in the art of the necropsy, has strong diagnostic skills, the ability to interpret samples from a variety of species, and can work closely with and support the clinicians in our hospitals and clinics. We are hoping to recruit a range of experienced and early career anatomic pathologists.

The pathology service manages a robust caseload consisting of primarily dogs, cats, lesser numbers of horses, alpacas, and small ruminants, as well as a variety of exotic species from our Zoo Med service, our Wildlife Clinic, and occasional animals from surrounding zoos and animal parks.  The section processes approximately 2,300 biopsies per year and 550 necropsies per year.  With cases coming from both primary and tertiary care facilities, we see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching resources and the basis for a wide variety of research projects.

The successful applicant would be part of a group of four anatomic pathologists with diagnostic responsibilities. All pathology faculty members are expected to contribute to diagnostic activities and to engage in teaching didactic courses, laboratories, and rotations. Diagnostic activity will be distributed amongst the anatomic pathologists and is expected to require up to a 60% commitment.

All faculty members are expected to engage in sufficient scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline. For individuals with the appropriate interests and expertise, opportunities for engagement in independent and collaborative research are available.  Cummings School has expertise in infectious diseases (including BSL3 agents and SARS-CoV-2), neurosciences, comparative oncology, cardiovascular health, nutrition, and is developing a comparative pathology core.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and be certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathology or European College of Veterinary Pathology in veterinary anatomic pathology.  Experience and expertise in diagnostic biopsy and necropsy service are necessary. Demonstrated ability to multi-task in an academic environment and in manage a robust necropsy and biopsy caseload with a client-centric attitude focused on meeting clinician needs.  They should also have demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching, possess effective communication skills, and have demonstrated ability to work in a team. For candidates with a strong interest in research, a PhD would be considered an asset. The specific expectations will depend on the appointment rank and the track. Appointments may be made in the clinical professor track for individuals with a strong diagnostic and teaching interest. Individuals with a strong research interest may be an appointment in the professor track.  Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
