Issam M. Fares Equine Sports Medicine Program
Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University has been recognized as a world leader in Equine Sports Medicine for over a decade. The difference between success and failure for equine athletes may be a matter of milliseconds, and the diagnosis often rests on the development of highly innovative and technical instrumentation. When proper and timely evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment are applied to the equine athlete, we have the chance to avert catastrophic, career-limiting injuries. To this end, we were pioneers in the use of the high-speed treadmill to facilitate metabolic stress testing, upper airway videoendoscopy, videoanalysis of lamenesses, and exercise electrocardiography. More recently, the development of non-invasive means of lung function testing in horses has led to the recognition of lower airway inflammatory disease as a leading cause of exercise intolerance in sport horses. State of the art diagnostic imaging, including nuclear scintigraphy, CT scanning, and ultrasonography, have allowed us to clearly identify conditions that had previously resisted diagnosis. Both medical and surgical therapy have advanced in accordance with our diagnostic ability. The discipline of equine sports medicine encourages collaboration with scientists, engineers, and physicians working with human athletes, and creates an enhanced fund of knowledge for the benefit of horses, humans, and medical science.
Prospective students who have an interest in Equine Sports Medicine are usually well aware of our exceptional ability and reputation in this field, and many cite the possibility of participating in the Equine Sports Medicine Signature Program as a major reason for seeking an education at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. New offerings in the Sports Medicine Signature Program include a Seminar in Clinical Equine Exercise Physiology, an Honors Senior Sports Medicine Elective, and research projects and electives during the school year and during summers in the Lung Function Laboratory, Orthopedic Laboratory, and Issam M. Fares Equine Sports Medicine Program. These experiences allow students to deepen their knowledge of equine sports medicine and to gain valuable experience in clinical equine sports medicine.
