Shelter Medicine Program Primary Partners

Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
A national leader in animal protection, the MSPCA offers many opportunities to Tufts students. Their Boston shelter offers one of the core Shelter Medicine rotations for senior students as well as a selective offering for pre-clinical students. In addition, through the SNAP program, the MSPCA refers some low income clients for services at the Luke and Lily Lerner Spay/Neuter Clinic. Dr. Cox has assisted with the Shelter Medicine curriculum as well as provided training for Cummings School technicians.
Animal Rescue League of Boston
The ARL offers the other core Shelter Medicine Rotation as well as selective and elective opportunities through the Center for Shelter Dogs. Dr. Smith has served as a co-instructor for the Shelter Medicine Course. Dr. Marder, Dr. Patronek and Sean Dowling have all also taught in the elective. The Center for Shelter Dogs has also hosted a student externship as well as two student final projects for the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy.
Merrimack River Feline Rescue
The leading feline rescue group in Massachusetts, MRFRS began working with Tufts Shelter Medicine in 2007 to help set up the feral cat clinics held at the Lerner clinic. MRFRS donated supplies, staff and expertise, and worked to train the Tufts Shelter Medicine volunteers. These clinics have provided opportunities for students to observe procedures, explore health and ethical issues associated with feral cats and for fourth year students to participate in spaying and neutering. MRFRS refers clients to the Lerner clinic through the Spay Mass hotline. As well as a shelter and TNR program, MRFRS runs a mobile spay neuter vehicle, the cat mobile, offers low cost spay neuter services when parked at the MRFRS main shelter in Salisbury and travels to communities in need. Students interested in volunteering at the MRFRS shelter are welcome and there is also a summer selective opportunity for students interested in spending time on the van.
