Large Animal Surgery Internship
The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, Hospital for Large Animals is a full service hospital, of which the caseload is predominantly competition and pleasure horses (80–85%). The remaining caseload is distributed evenly between food animal and exotic species. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities include high field MRI nuclear imaging, ultrasonography, computed tomography, dual energy X-ray densitometry, force plate gait analysis, high speed treadmill evaluation (including videoendoscopy), a pulmonary function laboratory and a comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory. The Hospital for Large Animals has two surgical suites, standing surgical facilities, and a full array of state-of-the-art equipment including a fluoroscopic image intensifier, arthroscopic and laparoscopic instrumentation and a surgical laser.
The primary responsibility of the surgical intern will be to assist faculty surgeons and residents receive and evaluate outpatients and prospective surgical patients, and make a diagnosis. The intern will assist in all aspects of the management of these patients under supervision of the residents and faculty surgeons. The intern will share after hours emergency duty on a rotating schedule with the large animal medicine and surgery residents. An emergency fee is paid for all after-hours emergencies. The intern will assist in the teaching of veterinary students, and will participate in rounds, seminars and didactic training as provided.
The Hospital for Large Animals is located with the Foster Hospital for Small Animals on 650 acres in a rural setting and within easy reach of Worcester (13 miles) and Boston (47 miles). The applicant should be aware that the hospital has a dress code.
A certificate of internship is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion of the 12 month training program. Interns participate in the University benefits programs, including health, professional disability and life insurance. Annual vacation and professional liability insurance are provided.
