Policies and Procedures for Tufts Paws for People members

  1. Tufts Paws for People members shall follow all Pet Partners' certification/registration policies.
  2. Tufts Paws for People members shall follow all Pet Partners' Policies and Procedures at all times while representing Tufts Paws for People.
  3. Before taking his/her own registered animal on a visit, new Tufts Paws for People members shall complete the following steps:
    • Shadow an existing Tufts Paws for People team for at least one visit in order to observe current procedures in action.
    • Set up visitation at a site that either is an established facility (with a completed facility contact form in place at the Tufts Paws for People office) or work with Deb Gibbs to ensure the facility is appropriate and has completed required paperwork.
    • The team (handler and animal) will be mentored on the first three visits by an existing Tufts Paws for People member to ensure visits are conducted in a consistently high quality manner.
    • A volunteer from another organization who has already been visiting with his/her animal may be considered for exemption from the Tufts Paws for People shadowing/mentoring requirements if all other Tufts Paws for People Policies and Procedures are met. Volunteers seeking this option must submit their qualifications, Pet Partners registration number, and the site(s) being visited to Tufts Paws for People. If the site has not already submitted a facility contact form, it will be contacted to complete a facility contact form and to ensure the team is complying with all Pet Partner procedures.
  4. Teams must wear either a Tufts Paws for People shirt or a Tufts Paws for People bandana on all visits (on handler, animal, or visit bag).
  5. Tufts Paws for People members will participate in at least one program activity/year (e.g., meetings, PR events, evaluations).
  6. If the Tufts Paws for People member has a registered animal, the team must visit at least 8 hours per year. Please keep track of the hours and the site(s) you visit as we will collect this information on a regular basis.
  7. Any volunteer found not following the policies and procedures will be deemed as forfeiting Tufts Paws for People membership until the criteria have been met.
