The ophthalmology residency program at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is designed to provide in-depth training in the medical and surgical aspects of clinical veterinary ophthalmology and to prepare the resident for the successful completion of all steps of the certification process leading to diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists after 3 years. Training will occur in The Hospital for Large Animals and Foster Hospital for Small Animals, at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, MA, which is approximately 40 miles west of Boston.
Resident duties include inpatient and outpatient clinical care and primary responsibility for ocular emergency coverage. Residents are required to participate in rounds, seminars and clinical conferences. Residents in the Department of Clinical Sciences are required to teach students on clinical rotations, assess student performance through student grades and clinical competency tracking, and instruct students in clinical skills laboratories. The residency also provides the opportunity to attend lectures and rounds at Boston and Worcester’s many neighboring human medical centers. During the 3 year program, residents are required to develop a research project pertaining to the field of veterinary ophthalmology and to prepare at least 3 manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Failure to meet this publication requirement may delay signing of the residency certificate.
Appointments will be made for 12 months with annual renewal based on satisfactory completion of the previous year. A certificate of residency is awarded to the candidate upon successful completion of the training program.
Residents participate in the University benefits programs, including health and life insurance. Annual vacation, a travel allotment and professional liability insurance is provided.
The applicant should submit his or her application through AAVC‘s Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program.
