Surgery

The surgery service at the Cummings School's Hospital for Large Animals is overseen by faculty who are board certified in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Faculty members specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of problems that may be alleviated by surgery. Although we treat all types of surgical cases in horses, camelids, ruminants, and porcine animals, surgical colics, upper airway disease and lameness are of special interest to us.

Our clinicians are aided in their orthopedic evaluation for lameness by the use of traditional methods and newer diagnostic imaging technologies, including radiography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine (bone scan), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). New treatment modalities used in treating certain lameness conditions include stem cell therapies, shock wave therapy, IRAP and platelet rich plasma therapies. Surgeries are performed in a state-of-the-art surgical suite in conjunction with our anesthesiology service.
