Referring Veterinarians

Dear Referring Veterinarians:

On behalf of the Hospital for Large Animals and everyone at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, I want to thank you for your continued support. Referrals are absolutely critical to our teaching, research and service missions and help us provide state of the art diagnostics and treatment services for animals throughout New England.

The Hospital for Large Animals has grown to be one of the largest referral hospitals in the Northeast, yet we strive to provide the same level of personalized, compassionate care that clients have come to expect. Behind the scenes, your patients receive the advantage of carefully orchestrated, team-based care. We have renowned faculty specialists, dedicated residents and interns, along with highly skilled veterinary technicians and staff. Our students are energized to provide high-quality care with compassion for patients and clients. Everyone here wants to provide you, the referring veterinarian, with the additional resources you need to manage cases.

We have experts to help with ultrasound examinations. We recently added high-strength MRI capabilities for horses and other large animals. We have installed a new 16-slice CT scanner that also will serve your patients. We have a state-of-the-art nuclear scintigraphy suite. You have ready access to the region's most powerful diagnostic imaging capabilities.

In addition, we offer a separate isolation facility which allows us to care for patients with infectious diseases while protecting our other hospitalized patients.

If you need to refer a case to us, please call (508) 839-7926 and we will help set up the care for your patient.

We understand that in order to optimize care of your patients and service to your clients, it is essential to receive thorough communications from us. As we strive for clear, effective and timely communications with our referring veterinarians, our policy is that you will receive a professional report shortly after we discharge a hospitalized patient you referred to us. In addition, our attending clinician will contact you if one of your patients comes to our emergency service and the client informs us that you are their primary care veterinarian. Our philosophy is that truly outstanding care of referred patients can only be delivered if the referring veterinarian is an informed and active participant in the process, and we are committed to achieving that goal with each case.

We value your referrals and your support. Thank you for all you do for your patients and the profession!

Yours truly,
Medical Director, Tufts Veterinary Medical Center
