Lluis Ferrer – DVM, DECVD, PhD
As a veterinary dermatologist, Dr. Lluis Ferrer is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of skin diseases in animals. The accurate diagnosis of a cutaneous disease frequently demands numerous microbiological, biochemical or immunological test (as the intradermal skin testing for allergies) that are performed routinely at the FHSA. Dr. Ferrer is also an expert in the microscopic evaluation of skin biopsies, one of the most effective diagnostic tools in dermatology. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Ferrer teaches dermatology to third-year students and mentors fourth-year students in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals.
Growing up in the island of Majorca, in the Mediterranean, he received veterinary training at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) and at the Veterinary School of Hannover (Germany). In 1995 Dr. Ferrer obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Dermatology and was actively involved in the development of the specialty in Europe, as member of the board of the European Society of Veterinary Dermatology and the European College of Veterinary Dermatology. At present time he is one of the co-editors of the reference journal of the specialty Veterinary Dermatology. Dr. Ferrer has developed in the last two decades several research lines oriented to get a better understanding and management of skin diseases as of animals, as leishmaniosis, demodicosis and atopic dermatitis. Attracted by the international atmosphere and the prestige of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, he joined the faculty in 2012.
He enjoys teaching, both at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level and specially likes the translation of the new scientific advances to the clinical veterinary medicine. 'I love the people that love animals' and working as a veterinarian I have the daily opportunity to help people to enjoy and strengthen the human-companion animal relationship.
Dr. Ferrer has an 11 years old Jack Russell Terrier ('Truc'). Literature, jazz and cooking traditional Mediterranean dishes are his main pastimes.
