This dual-degree program between Cummings School and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center provides an opportunity for a limited number of highly qualified students to pursue the doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree and the doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree simultaneously over approximately seven years. Through the dual-degree program, students receive rigorous training in a basic science research discipline, as well as full academic and clinical training as a veterinarian. The PhD research program concentrations include biochemistry, cell biology, immunology and virology, molecular genetics and microbiology, pharmacology, and physiology.
The program provides Tufts students with a unique educational experience that allows them to study in both public and private institutions and to benefit from the excellent facilities and faculties of two major universities. The accelerated pace of study and the added possibilities of stipend assistance and tuition remission are also advantageous.
Students should state their interest in the joint program when they apply to study at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University; students already enrolled may apply before December of their second year.
